What are Spark Plugs?
The function of a car’s spark plug is to deliver an electric current from the ignition system to the combustion chamber to ignite the compressed mixture of fuel and air by an electric spark, while containing combustion pressure within the engine. The resulting combustion is what ultimately powers the car. The plugs are little devices inside the cylinder that have a a metal threaded shell, electrically isolated from a central electrode by a porcelain insulator. The spark plug’s metal shell is screwed into the engine’s cylinder head and is therefore electrically grounded. The central electrode that protrudes through the porcelain insulator into the combustion chamber, forming one or more spark gaps between the inner end of the central electrode.
It is recommended that you change your spark plugs every 50,000 kilometres. The constant sparking of the electrodes causes tiny pieces of the metal to be burned off. Over a period of time, the gap between the metal tips gets too big for the spark to jump. Long-life spark plugs can last for for longer than 100,000 kilometres however you might find it extremely difficult, or even impossible, to remove them when the time comes. Also changing the spark plugs more regularly provides an opportunity to inspect them for signs of other engine problems. For example a blackened spark plug may be a sign your engine is running too rich.
Spark plugs that are in poor condition may lead to your engine misfiring and to run poorly. Engine performance will suffer, fuel efficiency will decrease, and emissions will dramatically increase. Your car may also be difficult to start.
